Pre-Operative Instructions (Upcoming Service)

The day of the procedure…

Give your son Tempra or Tylenol drops (also called acetaminophen) just before you leave home.

6-7½ lb – ¾ ml (60 mg)
8-9½ lb – 1 ml (80 mg)
10-11½ lb – 1¼ ml (100 mg)
12-14 lb – 1½ ml (120 mg)
15-17 lb – 1¾ ml (140 mg)
18-20 lb – 2 ml (160 mg)

Please do not give any other medication besides Tylenol or Tempra (i.e., No Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, etc.) because it may increase bleeding time.

  1. In our office, he will have topical anesthetic applied to his penis. This is an anesthetic cream that numbs the skin. This stays on for 30-45 minutes.
  2. Next, he is given a local anaesthetic by either an injection, or by a air jet injector(no needle technique). The latest technique is offered to some babies and is a revolutionary approach developed by our pain specialist, Dr Bélanger.* – into the tissues alongside the penis. Since the topical anesthetic has already numbed the skin, the injection is hardly felt. After 7-8 minutes, the penis is “frozen”, and the circumcision can be done.
  3. During the injections and the circumcision, your son will receive a sugar pacifier to suck on, which reduces his pain perception.

Please note, that although the circumcision only takes a few minutes, we require you to be in our office for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes in total so that we can carefully review with you all post procedure care and answer any of your questions.
